What were your expectations of college life before UC Merced?
I wasn’t exactly sure of what to expect, but I knew there was going to be change and growth.
How did your experience here correspond to that expectation?
I cannot fully express what my UC Merced experience has done for me. UC Merced has shown me that anything is possible if you put forth the effort. I’ve been active, empowered and liberated here. My mindset and aspirations have grown tremendously.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to volunteer abroad before entering into a master’s in education and teaching credentials program. I want to help make a difference in the world.
How did your experience at UC Merced prepare you for your future endeavors?
Being raised in the Central Valley really shaped my character. Attending UC Merced made me realize there are issues within the Central Valley that affect the entire nation. This university has shown me the resources that are available and what we can do to help the cause on an individual and grand scale. The diversity represented on campus demonstrates that every voice can be heard and represented.
What is your best UC Merced memory?
I would have to say standing backstage right before the Pilipino American Alliance’s first Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN). We expressed our gratitude to one another and reflected on everything we had accomplished up to that point. It’s been amazing growing with this club and everyone involved. A lot of hard work and amazing people helped make what the club is today.
What is the one thing you think all freshmen should know to make the most of their academic career here?
You can’t control the actions and behaviors of others but you can control your own. Make the most of everything you do and apply yourself wherever and whenever you can. Do not compare yourself to the pioneering class. Instead, build yourself on top of what is or isn’t established and continue the pioneering Bobcat spirit.
